Art Can Heal

Every Year 2 million Canadians are victims of violent and hate related crimes. It’s estimated that more than 360, 000 victims are students between the ages of 12-17. Even though our schools and communities want to be a safe place, they sometimes become a site of bullying, violence and psychological abuse. In these instances children are subjected to humiliating forms of harassment, sexual and gender-based violence, racism and hate-based crimes, with a growing trend that discriminates against students from low income families. Clearly children bully one another when they don’t understand one another, but bullying can quickly escalate into more serious offenses such as assault, harassment and hate based crimes.

Education is an integral part of our community that helps protect children from violence. Ideally it can free us from ignorance and open doors to the future, it is a powerful tool. Art’s Equity education is a combination of Multidisciplinary-Art, Theory and Advocacy that offers a deeper understanding, communication and action.

ENGAGEMENT WITH YOUTH & COMMUNITY

The Art’s Equity Initiative was launched as a form of advocacy and education to prevent bullying, harassment and hate based assaults. Art’s Equity believes that ‘equity’ or more specifically equality is a visceral knowledge, and can not be learned through theory or words alone. We utilize arts and smarts without discrimination to deliver a deeper understanding of equality, social justice and solutions at a local level. We envision a healthy and economically strong community powered by the leadership of youth and young adults. We aspire to be dedicated leaders in the advancement of youth leadership as a means of transforming the Hamilton community.
